Diane, you not only joined the family but you also share the most important day every year with several others. You have been good for Steve and we are glad you are with us!
Diane with her granddaughter, Ava and sharing a few stones with Cindy grandson.
Ava showing Grandma how she can walk, what a joy and how much fun to have those special little people.
I love this picture! Look at all the happy faces here, Steve, Diane with their family and brother Ken in the mix. Diane, even though you share - it is still unique so have a very special birthday and give that sweet Ava a hug from the rest of us!

Happy Birthday Lisa!!!!
Here is a great picture of Lisa showing off her famous "cat" glasses from 1970, I can't imagine that she would still have them - unbelievable! And they still look good!
Lisa showing off her great form in golf - I know one thing, Lisa had an absolutely fun filled time at the Reunion. Every picture I have of her is laughing and talking - two things she does very well!
What did I say - Look at that big grin. Of course someone was probably telling a story or reliving the "good ol' days".
This is a great picture of Lisa, Susan and Becky. Lisa was my godchild and she was an absolutely beautiful baby, (little prejudice - all my godchildren are special!)
Most of you remember that Grandma had a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the back yard and she had flowers with a trellis around Mary. Grandma would stand in the kitchen window washing dishes (can you believe that she never wanted a dishwasher) and she would pray while working. Anyway, the girls were young when they came to visit and one of them asked who was buried there.
Happy birthday, Lisa!
Jacki - Happy Birthday!
Jacki this is your day as well! Here is Jacki with Steve waiting for the rest of the line up for the "Cousins" picture.
Jacki and her sister Pam getting registered. It was so great having Jacki back for the reunion, she and her husband, Mark live on the East Coast.
Look at this great picture! Joe with Jacki, Pam and Pam's son, Tim. They all look great! I can remember Jacki eating oranges for ever. She would cut them in half, peal the skin back and eat the meat right out of the shell. She could do it without dripping any juice, never could figure that one out. Always a fruit lover and loved to run, so that kept her in great shape! Happy birthday Jacki.

Happy Birthday Kevin!
I got an email from Kevin last night, the first I have heard from him for a long time. He was ribbing me about forwarding an email on politics. He remembers the times I got so many of you involved in doing something in politics from going door to door to stuffing envelopes. Just think of the wonderful experience you all gained!
Anyway, this is Kevin's birthday - and we want to wish him the best today and hope that he did something fun.Kevin and Frank always have a great time when they get together - I am so glad Frank never grew up! (poor Mary Ann)
Kevin and Marcy enjoying the meal of the evening at the reunion. I am so glad they made the trip up, I know it probably was really hard on him.
Kevin was the third son in Mary Ann's family, Mary had a picture of her first three sons sitting on a piano bench and Kevin was the adorable one with red hair. Mary's boys had the most beautiful color of hair, but like Artie says; "we are a little prejudice". Kevin's son Jerrod is just six months younger than my Jeff - amazing isn't it? And now Kevin has two beautiful grand daughters, life is good. Happy birthday, Kevin!

Artie, Happy Birthday -
Artie was a great one for some wild hats - and this one is pretty wild! Look at that smile, now we know where young Artie got that great smile!
And the young, handsome Artie that Dorene fell in love with! What a guy!!
He was probably a living saint - very quietly put up with everyone and everything and kept that sweet smile in place. He loved to buy nice suits and could wear them well with his trim figure, he always looked very neat. He was a constant help to Grandma when she needed a hand with anything around the house. And above all, he was a REAL family man. We miss you, Artie.

Everyone listen up! It's Kenny's birthday!
OK Cathy, we get the message -
Kenny and his wonderful family - including the youngest member at the family reunion.
Kenny in the middle of things, yakking it up with the rest of the cousins.
When Ken was about 4 or 5 years old, he was staying with Grandma and she was working in the basement. Kenny had a wad of gum in his mouth which he accidentally swallowed and he started to choke. Grandma got flustered and grabbed him around the middle and started up the steps with him, of course she didn't realize that she was doing the heimlich and the gum popped out. Kenny was saying to grandma, "its OK grandma, its out now." Gosh, she was so shook up, I don't think she took care of anyone for a long time.
Have a great day, Ken!

Happy Anniversary Monica & Jim -
Happy Birthday Colton!
Sept 19th -
Yesterday, September 19th was Rick's birthday and I don't have any pictures of him; can you imagine. Nothing, zip, nada. Now, if they would have come to the reunion, I would have something to work with. But I do have a story or two that I'm sure many of you may remember.
He had a very small car when the boys were in high school and they would ride around town trying to get it to flip over. They would hit the curb, it would tip over and they would all jump out and flip it upright and trying it again. They had a great time, gave a few people heart attacks, but they had fun.

Pay Back!!!!!
OK, the 17th is Artie's birthday and now I get to tell some tales on him - oh boy!!
Wasn't he the cutest little guy, he looks just like his father and that smile got him into so much trouble.
That's him waving at the camera, I can pick out a few faces and I'm sure you can too. I see Jerry, Ronnie, Steve and Kevin to just name a few. When Artie was in grade school and someone would do something wrong, Artie would always get blamed because he had that - using his father's words - "sh_ t eat'n grin"!
Here is Artie teaching his cousin, Kurt how to play the organ. Artie was always very musical and loved to play many different instruments. I can remember a ukulele in there somewhere, and I think I gave it to him.
Going back to his blog on me, and the Halloween I dressed up as a witch was the year I came home to help with Grandpa. (He received the diagnosis in September that he had colon cancer and had only a few months to live.) He, grandma and Jane sat in that big front room window and laughed at the reaction of the kids. It was worth every minute to give him some great fun. I don't have the foggiest idea where the getup came from.
Draftsman Artie, how look how young and look at those glasses and hair, wow!
I also remember taking everyone to the lake for the 4th of July parade. I had the Ford Falcon loaded with kids and stuff for the float, backed out of the garage and ran square into Perry Butterworth's car parked in the drive way. I felt so bad, and he was so gracious to say that he shouldn't have parked there, he should have parked on the street.
What a great picture with Grandma, it was such a beautiful wedding. We all drove down for the wedding and had a great time. Grandma and I rode in the camper with a lot of the family, I can remember Frank taking a turn driving. We drove through the night and I sat up front with him for a while visiting. It was a great time and everything was so beautiful.
So Artie, I want to wish you a very happy birthday and have a great day with your family!

Happy Birthday Britney -
Look at that cute little face - how can you not smile with her. Britney is celebrating her 7th birthday today, I bet Mom, Lindey and Grandma, JoEllen had a party today.
Here is Britney placing flowers on her Great Grandpa, Artie's grave. Britney and her brother really had a good time getting to know the rest of her cousins. I'm glad they were able to come and share in the fun.

Don & Heather Anniversary -
Don and Heather are celebrating their anniversary today - and I want to wish them the best of everything to come for them. Don has a beautiful family and we certainly missed him at the reunion. It would have been great to get to know your family and I hope you will definitely come to the next one! We want to visit with you again, find out what is going on in your life, get to know your beautiful wife and two gorgeous girls. We really missed you!!!! Don, you have accomplished a lot in your life and I understand congratulations is order for Heather in getting her degree in nursing. Congratulations!
Thank You!
Well, I had quite a birthday, on the 8th I received two cards - (generic) one from my insurance company and one from J.C. Penny and I thought "whoop tee doo" this is going to be a great birthday! Then my actual birthday came and I was surprised at work with a cake, a hat (above) and some friendly bantering. Got home and found a million emails (exageration) from all my favorite nieces and nephews - and one even posted on the blog, thanks Artie. I received a phone call or cards from my brothers and sister, it was wonderful and I want to thank each and every one of you for making this such a memorable day. The worse part of being at the tail end of the family, birthdays were never really a big deal. I really can't remember ever having a party, but I don't think too many kids had parties in those days. I mean, after all the wagon train couldn't stop long enough for those kinds of celebrations.

Donna's Birthday!
Guess whose birthday is in September. It’s our own Umthun Family Blogger, Donna Mae.
It just doesn’t seem fit that Donna should post her own birthday month, so a few of us have conspired to make it happen. Donna, being the youngest of the 10 always seemed like more of a cousin than an aunt. She, of course, was the hippest and coolest of them with the best hair color. (OK I’m a little biased)
Just a couple of my favorite memories: I remember hiding behind my mom as she played a Halloween witch stirring a smoking cauldron on Grandma’s driveway. I didn’t know the magic of dry ice at the time and I don’t know if I ever got up the nerve to get close enough to get my candy.
She took the entire brood of us cousins to see Mary Poppins at the theater in Fort Dodge. I don’t know if that was brave or naïve, but we all enjoyed it.
We all enjoyed her wedding reception, but what she may not know is that the cousins bought the remaining beer after the reception and finished it off playing croquet the rest of the weekend at Virg’s house.
Best of all, Donna was one of those responsible for getting us all together last year to enjoy our greatly expanded family. To see the family tree in action was amazing. I think Grandma and Grandpa must have looked down with pride at the gathering. As life goes on we realize just how precious those times are.
Thanks, Donna. Enjoy your month even if you do have to share it.

Here's just a few pic's of Donna that have been dug up...
